Portfolio Manager Data Explorer

The ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager team needed a way to make their data accessible to the public: Thousands of commercial building owners across the United States use the Portfolio Manager tool to report and manage energy use data about their buildings, but this data was historically kept within the tool. To address this need, we created an exploratory web tool, making this data easy to interact with and glean insights from to help guide policy decisions around energy efficiency.

The U.S. EPA's Clean Air and Power Sector (CAPD) team came to us to help them develop a set of standards for data visualizations and data products across their sites. We created the Data Visualization Style Guide, a robust set of data visualization best practices and guidelines tailored to their needs. EPA employees and contractors alike can use it to produce new visualizations and refine old ones.
